Things I Didn't Expect To See

Cambodia

Arriving in Cambodia in 1991, there wasn't much traffic on the streets, which was good, since most streets were not paved. That was more than 20 years ago, but even so I never expected to see...

Crowds gathered in front of the palace, mourning the King
At 6:30am on Sunday morning, I was watching the Super Bowl behind the closed doors of an Irish Pub. The TV volume was off because outside our doors the country was completing 100 days of mourning for King Sihanouk. Thousands of people were streaming toward the Royal Palace, ladies in black sarongs and white blouses and men in black and white as well. Car traffic was blocked off, to make it easy for people who had come from every part of the country to bring their flowers and incense to their dead king. Loud speakers on every block were playing traditional funeral music, and it was all pretty moving.
